Laptop Repair Training Course Details

The training course takes place every half day per week for 4 weeks at our Basingstoke workshop.
On site beverages are provided. Overnight accommodation and meal arrangements are the responsibility of the customer.

Laptop Repair Training Course Prerequisites

Students should have successfully completed PC fundamentals or have basic experience of using a personal computer, Windows and web browsing. The following key skills are recommended:

  • Use a personal computer keyboard and mouse
  • Recognise the main components of a personal computer, such as case, monitor, mouse and keyboard, and different media such as floppy disks and CD Roms
  • Start the laptop computer and navigate the Desktop
  • Use Windows Explorer to create Folders and Subfolders; and move, copy, or rename files and folders
  • Use Internet Explorer to view websites

Learning is in stages, as follows:

1. Basic Functions of Laptops

  • What each part of a laptop computer does
  • Post - What stages a laptop goes through before it boots up
  • Operating System - Different types of operating system
  • Drivers - Understanding all drivers in the device manager
  • External devices - How the laptop handles devices such as USB, monitors etc.

2. Rebuilding an Operating System

  • Partitioning and formatting hard disk drive
  • Loading operating system and drivers
  • Testing all system devices

3. Stripping the Laptop and Rebuilding from Scratch

  • Introduction to different types of tools
  • Screen section: Dismantle and assemble
  • Base section: Install/Uninstall assemblies (Hard disk, DVD, Motherboard, etc.)
  • Motherboard section: Install/Uninstall sub pcb and associated components

4. Testing and Fault Finding of Laptop Parts

  • Screen assembly: Cable, inverter, backlight etc.
  • Motherboard: Controllers, chipset, video, BIOS, USB etc.
  • Hard Disk - Virus and malware detection
  • CD Rom - Checking for defects
  • DC jack faults, measurements and diagnostics
  • Power Management - Checking for short circuits etc.

5. Use of Soldering and Reflow Stations

  • Removal and replacement of DC Jacks, USB, Connectors etc.
  • Removal and replacement of screen backlights
  • Identification and removal of short circuit electronics components such as integrated circuits, capacitors, transistors etc.
  • Checking for dry solder joints
  • Use of surface mount component reflow stations
